Mudurnu, which has been an important settlement throughout its history, is one of the regions where the natural and historical environment can be preserved with the architectural traditions unique to the region and settled in accordance with the land structure. The slope and linear form of the land also affected the physical formation. The narrow streets shaded by the eaves and overhangs where the old Mudurnu houses are located are quite interesting. The streets, which sometimes end with a fountain, contain different types of traditional houses in a narrow and expanding layout.

Single, double or saw protrusions in the houses located in the street were formed in the middle, from the corner, completely or from one side in order to get a view according to their location. Rich wooden protrusions are not only building elements but also elements that give environmental characteristics. There are also houses with no exits that maintain the integrity of the street among the cantilevered houses. The houses have a sofa and open from the room to the sofa. The stairs of the houses with wooden floors and ceilings are also simple woodwork with balustrades. The wooden ceilings are highly decorated, the rooms are rich in architectural elements (old stove, ghuslhane, cabinets, wooden benches, etc.).

Mudurnu houses were built in the form of large and multi-roomed houses suitable for the traditional Turkish family type, the paternal grand family type. These are the houses where three generations live together, with a garden, the ground floor is closed to the outside, the upper floor is open, and can meet all the needs of the people living in it. They are usually 2-3 layers. Small spaces were created under the eaves. Ground floors are generally used as woodsheds, closets and barns. Ovens and water tanks protruding into the garden are also found on the ground floor of some houses. The second floors are winter and daily floors with low ceilings and small windows. The kitchen (soup kitchen), pantry and stores are on this floor. The third floors have higher ceilings. Small windows are usually seen in the rooms and the average number of windows in each room is 3. Each room is a separate unit. It’s like each one belongs to a family.

The structural condition of the houses is generally good, and some of the service spaces added later are traditional and integrated with the texture. Some of them are unhealthy units that were made with today’s materials and makeshift methods.

The houses are either used by the property owners or they are divided and rented out. As the relocations to new housing areas, which have been carried out by the Housing Development Administration in recent years and whose fourth phase has been completed in 2021, increase, the rate of use of houses in the old texture is also decreasing.
